According to the Global Carbon Projectt, the internet contributes significantly to global pollution, to the extent that it ranks as the fourth-largest “country” in terms of CO₂ emissions. This impact is due to a number of factors: from the inefficiency of web pages to the energy consumed by data centres and the devices used to browse the internet, which are often powered by fossil fuels.
To tackle this challenge, Longo has chosen to embark on a journey towards digital sustainability by adopting Karma Metrix, a tool that measures, improves and reports on a website’s environmental impact through a patented algorithm, providing concrete data on the CO₂ emissions and generated by browsing.
Between September 2023 and May 2024, the Longo website recorded average emissions of 1.02 g of CO₂e per page view, amounting to an estimated total of 0.14 tonnes of CO₂e. This figure is equivalent to approximately 1,018 km travelled by car – the equivalent of three return journeys from Milan to Marseille – or 1,290 km travelled by aeroplane – the equivalent of two return journeys from Milan to Genoa.
